Class Offerings
At Saptak, we typically offer following classes —

  1. Child individual
  2. Adult individual
  3. Child group
  4. Adult group

Group size is typically limited to 3-4 participants. Groups members are allocated after careful consideration of the background, knowledge and age of participants
Class Format and GenresParticipants meet on a weekly basis for 30-45mins.  Most of the classes are offered in 2 parts. The first half of the class provides technical training in Hindustani classical music along with voice training techniques. The second half of the class gives the participant an opportunity to explore the different genres of Indian vocal music. Some of the genres are described below.

  • Hindustani Classical Music: The foundation of Indian music is grounded in its classical music. There are 2 schools of Indian classical music: Hindustani representing the musical tradition of Northern India and Carnatic representing the musical tradition of Southern India. In Saptak School of Music, a participant will receive a step-by-step introduction to the different ragas (melodic scale) and taal (rhythm) of the Hindustani tradition
  • Bhajan: Devotional songs in Hindi and/or any other regional language of India
  • Ghazal: Ghazal has been a mainstay of sub-continental music cultural and has been, adopted into various languages. We work with not only Urdu ghazals, but also with ghazals in other languages like hindi and bengali
  • Folk: Songs representing the cultural, social and linguistic diversity of India
  • Bollywood light music: Old and new Hindi songs from the Indian movies. Participants will be trained and guided on how to perform a karaoke or an acoustic version of the song
  • Bangla music: Raka being a Bengali herself, offers classes on the different genres of Bangla music to interested participants. Some of the genres of Bangla music are: Rabindrasangeet(Songs of Rabindranath Tagore), Nazrulgeeti (Songs of Nazrul Islam), Songs of Atul Prasad Sen, Rajanikanta Sen, DL Roy, Bangla Adhunik gaan (Modern Songs), and Bangla Movie songs
  • Regional Indian music: India has rich treasure of sub-cultures spread across the South-Asian sub-continent. Based on a student's interest, Raka works with them to master any regional musical work. For example, Sufi, Marathi, Tamil etc.
  • Stage performances: Along with the regular format of classes, Raka encourages her students to perform on different local platforms and provides an in-depth training on how to perform on stage

Classes are mostly offered in the North-West Austin area. For more location choices in the Greater Austin area, please contact the instructor.
Class ObjectivesClasses at Saptak School of Music are intended for beginners as well as participants who have undergone some basic training in music. The goals of our classes are to provide—

  • A step-by-step progression towards vocal training
  • An overview of basics of Indian classical music
  • Exposure to different genres of Indian music

We have made our classes flexible enough to accommodate a participant’s personal interests in music. The idea is to make the learning process a fun and interactive experience as much as possible.
EligibilityThere is no eligibility as such however, a meet and greet session maybe requested by the instructor before beginning regular classes.
TimingsWeekly sessions are offered for 30-45mins./day. Classes can also run for 1hr. depending on the class requirement and convenience of all the parties involved. Class days are preferably on weekends. Specific days and times during the week are available, if needed.
